I weathered the storm today, along with 10,000 others, to listen to Barack Obama give a speech at Widener University. Even though me, my son, and my mother were drenched from head to toe—and freezing, my heart was ablaze. Not so much because I finally was able to hear one of his speeches in person, but I was overwhelmed at the turnout.
The sea of rain suits and umbrellas that were made up of all different shades, ages, and genders caused me to well up on more than a few occasions. It was a good thing I wore my sunglasses because I am “Superwoman” in my son’s eyes, so my tears may have freaked him out. However, now that I think about it, I could have just blame my tears on sleep-deprivation because ya’ll know I was up watching the World Series the night before (Go Phillies!)
Senator Obama’s visit was such a big deal for the city of Chester that Chester Upland School District cancelled Tuesday classes, so the students would have the opportunity to take part in something a lot of their ancestors gave their lives for. And even though, I’m sure most of them just thought of today as a free day from their schoolwork, there were a few others who tried to understand the magnitude of this historical event, and for them I say, "Yes We Can!"
