Last night I had the pleasure of, once again, experiencing something that I thought was at death’s door—Hip-hop! I mean real Hip-Hop! In Camden, New Jersey, of all places, Kanye West proved to me, Reese, and countless others what he knew all along…he really is #1. Hands down, the man will no longer get a debate from me! This man single-handedly resurrected hip-hop like it really was a Phoenix, and nobody can deny that hip-hop needed a rebirth.
I didn’t realize how much I had begun to settle for convenience versus real love when it comes to music. It was commonplace to endure the mediocrity of a Lil Wayne because I was worn out from believing that somehow we would find our way back to what hip-hop once was.
Before last night, my hip-hop self esteem was at an all-time low, hell you could have just referred to me as Anna-Mae and I would have responded, I had been lyrically beat down so much that some rap slurs had become painless. But no more, the wall that had been constructed around my heart to guard me from all the misogyny, greed, and degradation has been compromised by the Ye.
Not only is the Glow in the Dark Tour a movement, it’s also fun. You get so caught up in the musical euphoria that you forget it’s a one-man show! Ya heard me, it’s a one-man show. He does not have an entourage share the stage with him (with the exception of Lupe on “Touch the Sky”). It is just one of the best demonstrations of self-expression I have ever seen, and I’m glad that I was able to be a part of the experience. And Reese you have set the benchmark for graduation gifts. Thanks!!!!!
